Protect the North Fork
This website supports the efforts of residents in Colorado's North Fork Valley to secure meaningful protections for the public lands, clean water and air, and local community in which they live, work, and recreate.
A project of the Colorado Farm & Food Alliance.
With Colorado's highest concentration of organic and sustainable farms and ranches, over a dozen wineries (and North America's highest wine arbors), exceptional farm-to-table dining, a strong creative community, and a growing list of festivals and events.
Surrounded by some of the nation's most beautiful public lands from the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area to the West Elk Mountains and the Grand Mesa - and a thousand more places between.
The North Fork Valley is home to an interesting and vibrant set of residents, businesses, and organizations. The towns of Paonia, Hotchkiss, and Crawford each have their own flavor, but together the North Fork has long been known as a special kind of place.
From even before the earliest days of American settlement in the valley, the rich soils were a hot bed for agriculture. The local economy has long relied on farming and coal-mining. But now, as the coalmines are reaching their end, and many locals are looking toward the future, not reaching for the past.
Instead of accepting another boom and bust industry, many in the valley want to build a more sustainable and enduring economy. We accept that climate change is real and that it means we must leave most fossil fuels where they are - in the ground. Oil and gas development does not fit with this vision for the North Fork's future.
